The draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, released by India’s Ministry of Law and Justice, was initially met with optimism from the in-house legal community, especially the General Counsels’ Association of India, which had long advocated for the recognition of General Counsels as “legal practitioners” under the Advocates Act, 1961. However, the draft quickly encountered strong opposition from the legal fraternity, prompting an early suspension of the consultation process.
